2022
Following my graduation (BEng Tech Mechanical), I promptly threw myself into mechanical design as a Graduate Design Engineer at Cullen Engineering LTD.
Coming in to work at Piako Transport Engineering, I knew next to nothing about the fabrication and design of Heavy Vehicle Trailers. Working with Sam, who is nearing the end of his studies, I became aware of the opportunity and lack of brake certifiers and made the decision to push myself towards gaining the HVEK qualification.
Without the support of the Geoff Walsh Memorial Scholarship, there would have been no way financially for me to even think about the possibility of doing the course.
Sitting the HVEK brake course was a huge eye-opener into the rules and regulations in the heavy vehicle transport industry. My knowledge has increased significantly, and I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with many people knowledgeable of the heavy vehicle industry, who throughout my journey have significantly impacted my career to pushing for more opportunities.
It is awesome to know there is a committee dedicated to helping young engineers pursue their dreams, which to say is an unfamiliar concept to me, is an understatement.
I want to say a huge thank you to the committee for providing so many people with the means to push themselves further, the opportunity has changed my perspective of the industry dramatically.
So, a huge thank you to HVE Committee, the Geoff Walsh Memorial Scholarship Committee, and the HVE Group for the support.
I look forward to what the future brings
